The Futility of Struggle

A woman came to me a short time ago wrestling over what she considered a big dilemma in her life. She had tossed and turned all night. She had worn herself weary. Worse, she kept going further into struggle the more she talked. The mole hill was now a looming monster of a mountain. She couldn’t let it go.

From where I was viewing, I didn’t see a dilemma. I saw a relationship problem. The real issue was how she was relating to what she considered a dilemma. The only real way out of this was to find resolution as opposed to grasping for the “right” move, or being immobilized by fear of making the wrong move.

We talked for awhile. She went inside herself, exploring the situation from her brilliant mind. She witnessed her struggle. She recognized the underlying core issue. As I often do, I suggested that she try turning the situation over, saying, “Show me God. Show me what to do.” Immediately hearing my suggestion, as is most generally the case, her energy shifted—instantly! Her obsessing disappeared. She began to breathe deeply. She went silent as she moved deep within the center of her heart, connecting to her knowing. She had moved from her head to her heart where struggle does not exist. Now, all she had to do was be present and listen, listen for the “right” move to arise.

Life just isn’t as complicated as we make. It just isn’t. And when we make life so unnecessarily complicated we miss out on life itself. We waste our life. We end up living in the minor details of our life rather than living anything of significance. So, the next time you find yourself wrestling over a situation, big or small, try turning the situation over to God. Let go of control…of trying to control outcome. Let go of your agenda. Doing this makes life much easier and leaves you with energy that can be used to serve a greater purpose.

Just imagine what a different world we would be living if our world leaders could turn matters over to God…the God that lies within all our hearts.
